Back in 2014, Downcity Outfitters burst onto the scene right here in downtown Providence, right on Washington Street, behind the Biltmore hotel. We wanted to create a store that brought high-end outdoor gear and fashion together under one roof. There wasn’t anything like it in the city at the time.
We wanted to have a lineup that would make any fashion-forward adventure junkie jump for joy. Picture this: The North Face, Columbia, Yeti Coolers, New Balance, Champion, Hunter, Canada Goose, Sorel, Poler Stuff, Fred Perry, Cleverhood, On Running, Wolverine, Red Wing, Danner, and Daniel Wellington among others. These brands represented the best in quality, style, and durability. Whether you were conquering a mountain or just strutting down the streets of Providence, we knew we got you covered in the freshest gear around.
But it wasn’t just about the clothes, my friends. Downcity Outfitters became a hub of awesomeness in this community. We have put down roots by hosting events with local schools like Brown, RISD, Johnson & Wales, Providence College, and Bryant University. We’ve teamed up with local organizations and fitness centers. We’ve participated in a bunch of local events like PVD Fest, Gay Pride, Farm Fresh Farmers Markets, and the events organized by the Hope Artiste Village and its community of tenants. We have also provided jobs for the amazing peeps right here in Providence.
And let’s not forget about our local heroes, the homegrown brands and designers. We have been all about shining a spotlight on the incredible talent right here in Providence. By featuring their kick-ass products, we’ve been not only supporting our local economy but also showcasing the unique flavor of our city.

In 2016, we decided to spread our wings and bring even more style to Providence. Paloma Boutique was born, creating an adjacent store focused exclusively on women’s leather goods and accessories. Talk about taking it to the next level!
Paloma Boutique became the go-to spot for all the ladies out there who wanted to up their fashion game. We carefully handpicked a lineup of top-notch brands that would make any fashionista weak in the knees. Imagine strutting your stuff in Tory Burch, Coach, Milly, Hammitt, Kate Spade, Brahmin, Kendra Scott, and MZ Wallace. A dream come true for those who appreciate the finer things in life.
This expansion was all about providing a dedicated space where women could find the perfect accessories to complement their killer style. We wanted to offer a haven for those looking for luxurious leather goods, stylish handbags, and statement accessories. The response from the community has been nothing short of phenomenal.
The addition of Paloma Boutique has allowed us to cater to a wider audience while maintaining our commitment to quality and style. It’s the perfect synergy, with Downcity Outfitters representing the outdoor and adventure side of things, and Paloma Boutique bringing a touch of sophistication and elegance to the mix. Together, we’ve created a fashion destination like no other.
The Hope Artiste Village and the Farmers Market
In pursuit of growth and new opportunities, Downcity Outfitters and Paloma Boutique made a bold move to the vibrant and buzzing Hope Artiste Village. Why, you ask? Well, let me tell you, it was a game-changer for us.
One of the main draws was the fantastic Farmers Market that Farm Fresh Rhode Island had going on Saturdays. We knew that being in the midst of this vibrant market would bring incredible energy and a constant flow of locals and visitors seeking fresh produce and local goods. It was a match made in heaven!
But that’s not all. The Hope Artiste Village is a thriving community of local businesses and artists. It’s a creative hub that embodies the spirit of collaboration and entrepreneurship. We felt right at home among this amazing group of like-minded individuals who share our passion for supporting local talent and fostering a sense of community.
Moving to the Hope Artiste Village also gave us more space to spread our wings and take things to the next level. We now have the freedom to host special events in collaboration with local organizations, creating memorable experiences that bring people together. Whether it’s a fashion show, a charity event, or a pop-up shop featuring local designers, we now have the room to make it happen.
Another major advantage of our new location is the ample space for our warehouse and online operations. We’re able to efficiently manage our inventory, ensuring that our customers get their hands on their favorite gear and accessories in a timely manner. Additionally, the added office space provides a comfortable and productive environment for our team.
2020 and the pandemic
No one could have predicted the whirlwind that was the COVID-19 pandemic, and Downcity Outfitters and Paloma Boutique were not exempt from the challenges it brought. The stores faced unprecedented obstacles, including disruptions in the global supply chain, staffing shortages, and the ever-changing regulations impacting in-person retail. It was a rollercoaster ride, to say the least.
Navigating through the uncertainty and adapting to the new normal was no easy feat. The stores had to pivot their operations, prioritize the safety of their customers and staff, and find innovative ways to serve our customers. Despite the hardships, the determination to weather the storm remained unwavering.
One of the major hurdles was the impact on the supply chain. Delays in manufacturing, shipping, and logistics meant that acquiring new inventory became a significant challenge. The stores had to carefully manage their existing stock and find creative ways to meet customer demands.
The pandemic also caused a strain on personnel resources. Staffing shortages and restrictions on social interactions presented staffing challenges. However, the resilience and commitment of our team to providing the best possible service played a vital role in the survival of the stores during these trying times.
Pandemic or not, we persevered and came out stronger than ever
Despite the obstacles, the stores were able to weather the storm and emerge on the other side. Their adaptability, strong community ties, and unwavering dedication to their customers were key factors in their survival. The support of the local community, as well as the loyalty of their customers, played a crucial role in keeping the doors open and the spirit of Downcity Outfitters and Paloma Boutique alive.
